My 2012 in pictures- Day 65

Today we were busy a good part of the day with our homeschool work fun.  To go along with Savannah’s Science today we made our own recycled paper.  That was really neat to do with her. She thought it was pretty cool and plans on keeping her paper. 🙂  We shredded, by hand, a couple of sheets of newspaper and put it in a blender and covered it with hot water. Then we waited 10 minutes then blended it all up until it was smooth. Next, we bent a wire coat hanger into a circle and then covered it with an old pair of pantyhose and placed that on top of a large bowl. We poured the blended mixture over the panty hose and let the water thoroughly drain out of the mixture.

Then you place a paper towel over a cutting board and put the nylon on top of it. Then you place a piece of paper towel on top of it and iron it until dry. This took forever and more than one piece of paper towel. Finally we had our finished product.  When it was completely dry it turned out to be a light gray color and ours was a bit thick so it was more like the consistency of cardboard but it was a lot of fun and educational. Savannah sent me this email:

“Each ton of recycled paper can save  17 trees, 380 gallons of oil, three cubic yards of landfill space, 4,000 kilowatts of energy, and 7,000 gallons of water.  U should so stick this on your blog”
