Have you all heard this?
This is unbelievable that this is another practice that is allowed. “Pink slime” is really beef trimmings. They call it lean finely textured beef but in reality it is waste trimmings, simmering them at low heat so the fat separates easily from the muscle, and spinning the trimmings using a centrifuge to complete the separation. Next, the mixture is sent through pipes where it is sprayed with ammonia gas to kill bacteria. Once only used in dog food and cooking oil, the trimmings are now sprayed with ammonia so they are safe to eat and added to most ground beef as a cheaper filler.
You won’t know if it’s in the meat you are buying either because it won’t appear on the label because, over objections of its own scientists, USDA officials with links to the beef industry labeled it meat. I call it fraud! We have got to get the word out and demand a change. With the crazy high prices of meat already I definitely am not playing that much money to buy Pink Slime something that has to be treated with ammonia gas to make it safe to eat!
How much are we supposed to just sit back and accept? I will not be buying any beef from the grocery stores any more. We actually just told a friend of ours that we want to buy a half a side from him in the future and we take in our goats for processing. It’s a lot better to know exactly what is going into your food. I know you are thinking I am crazy about goat but it is really good and a lot leaner than beef. We were introduced to it here years ago when we started raising goats but never actually took any in to be processed. There is typically very little (if any) grease to drain off the meat after you cook it on the stove top. I prefer using goat now to beef. Anyhow, that is a whole other subject.
