About the book
It may seem strange at first because I don’t believe most folks think of holiness as an utter relief. Hard perhaps, boring if we’re honest, necessary like flossing, a level of spirituality we might attain to one day. But a relief? Look at it this way: Ask the anorexic young girl how she would feel if she simply no longer struggled with food, diet, exercise – if she simply never even gave it another thought. Ask the man consumed with jealousy how he would feel if he woke one day to discover that all he once felt jealous over was simply gone. Ask the raging person what it would be like to be free of rage or the alcoholic what it would be like to be completely free from addiction. Take the things you struggle with and ask yourself, “What would life be like if I never struggled with this again?” It would be an utter relief. An absolute utter relief.
John Eldredge asks “What is Christianity supposed to do to a person?” in the first chapter of his new book, “The Utter Relief of Holiness”. What would you say? Mr. Eldredge tells us the answer is that it “restore him as a human being”. Holiness to me has always seemed unattainable to me. I mean Jesus is Holy we are sinners. The book is broken down into two parts (part one-The Surprise of Holiness & part two The Way to Holiness).
In My Opinion
This book would be a great Bible study as it is packed with scripture. I found myself taking notes as I read because of some powerful quotes and thoughts he mentioned. I have to admit that there were a couple chapters in the beginning that seemed to drag on. I think it’s because of all the information though. I think when I read it again like a Bible study (as I am planning to do) that it will be fine. I have always wanted to be more like Jesus and I strive for that every day but I never knew it was actually possible to be holy. I was excited about that discovery. John covers a lot of the character flaws that keep us falling short or questioning our abilities like- doubt, morality and more. Too me there was one super powerful chapter that really spoke to ME. It was full of personal question that I really needed to think on. It wakes you up and grabs your attention. I am still striving for the wholeness as well. I have felt that that something is missing. I have struggled with the “what is my purpose” question. I always new I was meant to be a mommy and we take care of God’s planet and try to help others as we can but what is “MY” purpose. What am I supposed to be doing? I still don’t know what I want to be when I grow up. This book was a huge eye opener for me. One, like I said, I plan to read again but in a slower more methodical way. I would definitely recommend this book to everyone. I believe this would be a great teaching book that will bring you closer to God. You can watch the book trailer below.
