Meet Carlito! This little cutie is the brain child of Domenico Marcario, M.S.. He is the creator of the c3pla Sensory Math Teaching System, retired high school mathematics teacher and full-time passionate grandparent! As the mom to a very visual and hands on learner this is going to be a very helpful tool as I homeschool and play with my children.

As the picture above shows, there are 20 steps to this program including 40 games, 2 per step, that you play with your child. This comes as a simple set of cards (the cover looks just like the pic above) and are bound with a single metal ring. They are double sided, very colorful and fun and walk you through the entire thing. You will need to gather “stuff” for the games or take the easier step and download the FREE manipulative’s and print them out. For the parents, they also have FREE certificates of excellence you can download and personalize for your children. For the kids, you can check out Carlito’s FREE music downloads and enroll in Carlito’s Hall of Fame.
The material is presented in 3 stages with a total of 20 steps and 2 games in each step that cover quantity, numeration and operations. Stage 1: Quantity consists of steps 1 – 10 (Alike it or Not, Hungry Lion, Climb Up, Neighbors, In a Row, More or Less, Eye Spy, What Do They Make, Put it Together and Measure Up). Step 2: Numeration is steps 11-14 (I’ll Trade You, Counting Beads, Piggy Banker, Jump and Skip-Count). Then Step 3: Operations is the last 15-20 steps (Gluing & Scissor Action, Grid/Matrix & Folding Action, Combining Operation, Taking Away Operation, Duplicating Operation and Folding Down Operation).
Each Step walks you through the What, Why and How. This means each step tells you the What (concept being taught), the Why (the reason for learning the concept) and the How (the way the concept will be taught). The Get Ready on each step tells you what you will need to get ready and then there are the steps that walk you through it. I would suggest gathering everything you need and reading the steps before having your child come play with you for their enjoyment. This game above called Hungry Lion has proven to be a real favorite. As you can see on the card above the What, Why and How are spelled out on the right followed by the Get Ready and the steps. This one is as simple as setting up 2 plates with healthy snacks on them, asking your child to examine them and then face the plate with the later amount of snacks on it and open their mouth like the “Hungry Lion” or < symbol. If they are right they get to eat the larger amount. There is more to it than that but you get the idea. How fun is this game?!? I am thinking chocolate though and not strawberries. 🙂 just kidding…well kind of.
