This very nice hard cover book is written with the young child in mind and their first day of school jitters. I, myself, am a homeschooling mom but the ideas and theme this story is based around seems pretty right on to me. My oldest daughter, now 18, was a public schooled child and went through these first day of school jitters. The story is told through a series of rhymes that relate how the little girl feels about being “forced” to go to school and not feeling it was right to make a young child go to school all alone and how she dealt with those feelings. It also talks about what her mom does to make her feel better and ends with the first day of school not being so bad after all. I really enjoyed the cute little rhymes and all the colorful pictures on the pages in this story. My boys sat on my lap as I read it staring at the pictures. The story is short with only 27 pages and a couple lines on each page but it took us quite a while to get through it as my boys wanted to touch and point out all the different things they saw on all the pages!

They really LOVED it! At the end of the story there is a page where you can record some stats about your own child’s first day of school (which I thought was a really great and super sweet idea). The “Cooper and Me” books are not just stories though as they are also educational books that go along with Common Core Educational Standards and each book has it’s own Reading Guide. At the end of this story there are a couple different sections. First is Life Lesson that talks about dealing with separation anxiety and new places. Next is a section called Connections that asks questions to the child reading the book like, “The little girl is not happy going to school. Have you ever felt this way?” and then a section I really like called Learning Together, where you continue to ask your child questions to see if they really absorbed what was read to them like, “Who is the little girl’s best friend?” and “What kind of activities do they do together?”. I really, really enjoyed this story as did my children and love that it goes beyond just being another kids book and wants to engage the children and goes along with the Common Core Educational Standards! They also have printable coloring and activity pages on their website HERE.

The story behind Cooper and Me also offers an inspiring example of families working together to help others. In addition to helping young children gain emotional resilience and confidence through their books, Alexa and her mom Monique wanted to go beyond to help the less fortunate kids. In their search for an ogaiization to which they could donate a portion of the proceeds from the Cooper and Me book led to a charitable alliance with the Happy Hearts Funds. Happy Hearts improves children’s lives through education and sustainable programs in natural disaster areas.

Keep up the great work, Alexa and Monique Peters and of course Cooper! We can’t wait to read more.
