Hugo The Happy Starfish “The Secret to Happiness”
Suzy Liebermann, now living in the USA, has traveled the world in pursuit of language, art, and culture. Having found it, she now shares it with the world’s teachers, parents, and children through educational literature. She launched Happy Language Kids Publications in 2010 as an interactive language learning program for children and their young-at-heart elders. This program is particularly aligned with the aims and values she upheld as a teacher of cultural art and foreign language at a prestigious International Baccalaureate World School. Today Suzy Liebermann lives her dream of helping others to find the right attitude for life – because life gets so much easier with the right attitude. We might not be able to control life’s circumstances or other people’s actions however we can control our attitude towards them.

In this story little Hugo is searching for Happiness. He is ready to pack up and leave when the wise Manta tells him to look for happiness where he lives. He looks here and there but can’t find happiness anywhere. Then Hugo finds something that makes his heart flip. Through this story Hugo learns that sharing is caring and Sharing with others is the only thing that makes him truly happy; all other things just made him feel better for a little while. As parents we strive to teach children to share within our communities. I personally have been teaching my children to do things for others even if just simple things. When we go to the store we try to find others to help. If we see an elderly person or mother with young children we always offer to help unload their cart or take their cart for them when they are finished so they don ‘t have to leave young children unattended or something to that affect. They are always thankful and smile which makes my children smile in return. They know they are doing something sweet. We try to do things that others don’t know about as well like cleaning up at the park or on the walking trail. Others don’t see us doing it and we don’t hear a thank you or anything but they know they are being responsible and helping take care of our planet and that makes God proud of them. Encouraging children to give teaches them empathy, as well as a sense of social responsibility. Children can feel empowered by giving and sharing with others.
I love this series and the lessons that it helps us teach our children. This book and the others in the series are available on Amazon and are even available in 7 languages.
