It’s a movie about a boy that who loses his father and receives a mentor in his grandfather (Eric Roberts) who teaches him how to surf. Also has Jason Castro from American Idol fame. 17-year-old Jake and his mom move to live with his grandfather in a quiet coastal town, Jake is certain it’s going to be the worst summer of his life; he can’t even find decent wi-fi! But when he catches the eye of a beautiful surfer girl, Jake begins to think that there’s more to life that the internet. Now, with the help of his legendary grandfather, Jake will go from surfing the internet to surfing the waves. Stuck in the beach town with no friends and no knowledge of surfing, Jake has nowhere to turn until Cody (Jason Castro), the local surf shop owner, reveals that Jake’s grandfather is a surf legend. Tired of feeling like an outcast, Jake asks Lou to teach him about surfing. Jake learns to face his fears, push through inhibitions and realizes that winning the respect of his new peers – and Katie’s heart – might mean facing the biggest challenge of his life.
I really enjoyed this movie and it had a lot of real life struggles in it that I can see many teenagers are dealing with today. I am a strong believer in helping our children find something they are passionate about and encouraging that desire to keep them on the right path when life gets hairy…..and we all know life will get hairy. Having a passion really helps kid your head on straight. My 5-year-old son jumped off the computer and sat down beside me to watch. That says a lot when a 5-year-old walks away from Minecraft to sit down and watch a movie by his momma.
