This mouth watering cream cheese frosting only takes 5 ingredients and 5 minutes to make! This silky smooth frosting could be used on cupcakes, cakes, brownies, muffins, sugar cookies, and cinnamon rolls. Today we are making cinnamon rolls with cream cheese frosting!

INGREDIENTS

It’s important when making cream cheese frosting to remember to use the best ingredients. You will want to choose a softened FULL FAT cream cheese, Whole milk (again for the full fat), softened unsalted butter, and sift your powdered sugar.

Ingredients needed for this recipe.

Cream cheese

Like I stated you want a full fat cream cheese for this recipe because the fat content is crucial to making it smooth and decadent. Make sure it is at room temperature as well, so you don’t end up fighting with lumps.

Unsalted butter

This is important because different brands add different amounts of salt to their salted butter. I personally only use unsalted butter in all of my recipes, so I can control the amount of salt in my finished products. Also make sure you are using real butter and not a butter substitute like margarine.

Whole milk

Just like with the cream cheese you will want to use the whole milk due to its higher fat content. The fat and sugar in this recipe gives it the smooth texture and buttery taste.

Vanilla

Vanilla is crucial because it enhances the sweet flavor and it takes the edge of the cheesy bite from the cream cheese. For me, vanilla is one of those ingredients in recipes that I typically take as a suggested amount knowing I will add more.

Powdered sugar Sifting your powdered sugar is key to making sure you end up with a silky smooth frosting. You can use a mesh strainer to sift the lumps out creating a finer powdered sugar.

PRO TIPS
*Use FULL FAT cream cheese and milk for this recipe. The fat content is what helps to make this a rich, smooth frosting.

*Sift your powdered sugar to help keep the silky smooth consistency

*Make sure the cream cheese and butter are room temperature. If they are cold they will make your frosting lumpy.

*If you want the frosting thinner you can add more milk and thicker you add more powdered sugar.

*You could even tint this frosting by adding a couple drops of food color paste. Do not use the liquid drops it will add more liquid to the frosting.

CAN YOU FREEZE CREAM CHEESE ICING? You can freeze cream cheese frosting up to 3 months if sealed in a freezer bag with most of the air removed by flattening it down. If using a container you will want to also add plastic inside under the lid. Freezing can change the texture. It can become crumbly and/or grainy. When it is removed from the freezer it needs to thaw in the refrigerator for a day, If the texture has changed you can whisk it again until smooth.

CAN THIS BE LEFT ON THE COUNTER? This can only be left on the counter for a couple hours. Remember this has cheese in it, so it will need to be refrigerated. Don’t worry though you won’t have leftover, ha ha. You can keep this in the refrigerator for a week on the odd chance there are leftovers.

Notes

You will need to use both FULL FAT milk and cream cheese. The fat content in this recipe is what helps to make the frosting buttery and smooth.
Sifting your powdered sugar before you use it will help keep the silky smooth texture in your frosting.
If you try to use cold butter or cream cheese it will create lumps in the frosting. It is very important that you use room temperature ingredients.
This creates the perfect consistency that we love to smoother our homemade cinnamon rolls in.
To create a thinner frosting simply add in splashes of milk until you reach your desired consistency.
To create a thicker frosting just add in more powdered sugar.
If you want to color the frosting that is easy enough with a small amount of food color paste. I would not use liquid because it will add more moisture to your frosting.
